Ilitch Charities Feature: Grow Detroit’s Young Talent

Grow Detroit’s Young Talent provides opportunities to over 8,000 youth, each year. The initiative through the city of Detroit provides summer employment opportunities for Detroit youth, ages 14-24. What we really want to do is expose our young people to opportunities. We want to expose them to different career paths – especially when they’re young – to get them to understand what opportunities exist,” said Terri Weems, President of Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation, which is the fiduciary for GDYT. “We also want them to get exposure to employers, to understand how to interview and show up for work. Most of our students come out with a credential at the end of the opportunity, so that they’re employable. The goal is to create this pipeline for the city of Detroit, for future workers.

Nicole Sherard-Freeman, Group Executive of Jobs, Economy & Detroit at Work in the Office of Mayor Mike Dugganleads the program and accepted a $100,000 grant at the Detroit Sports + Entertainment’s Community Celebration, presented by Ilitch Charities.
