On August 6, Lou Whitaker became just the eighth player in Detroit Tigers history to have his uniform number retired. During a pre-game ceremony at Comerica Park, with his family in attendance, Whitaker’s No. 1 was revealed in center field. Tigers players and coaches also wore a Lou Whitaker number retirement patch on the left sleeve of their uniform for the game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The ceremony in Comerica Park wrapped up 3 days of celebrations including a private Lou Whitaker Legend Dinner on Wednesday, August 3 with Willie Horton, Lance Parrish, and Alan Trammell all in attendance. A Fan Q&A with Whitaker, sponsored by Bally Sports Detroit’s Trevor Thompson, was held on Friday, August 5.
