Good Cakes and Bakes opens on Columbia Street in The District Detroit
Good Cakes and Bakes, a longtime Detroit favorite pastry shop, recently opened its doors at 22 W Columbia Street in the heart of The District Detroit. At a ceremony on July 27, owners April Anderson and Michelle Anderson were joined by Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, Wayne County Executive Warren Evans, Detroit City Council Member Mary Waters, Council Member Fred Durhall III, and Rian English-Barnhill, Olympia Development’s Vice President of Government & Community Affairs.
Columbia Street is the second Good Cakes and Bakes retail location in Detroit. Good Cakes and Bakes continues to be nationally recognized for its high-quality, organic desserts and baked goods. Good Cakes and Bakes was incorporated by spouses and owners, April and Michelle Anderson, in 2013. Since opening the doors to their Livernois location, they have been featured nationally on NBC’s Today show, Oprah’s OWN network, the Food Network, and the Cooking Channel. April and Michelle are also the recipients of the prestigious James Beard Foundation Food and Beverage Investment Fund for Black and Indigenous Americans and continue to bake for former President Clinton and most recently Beyoncé.
“We are thrilled to expand our presence Detroit,” said April Anderson, Good Cakes and Bakes owner and pastry chef. “Columbia Street is a great opportunity to expose visitors and locals to our baked goods. And we are doing something a little different at this location, in addition to our baked goods, we will be serving coffee and more breakfast items.”
Originally from Detroit, April Anderson attended Chadsey High School and afterward obtained her Bachelor of Science from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. Later, April received her Master of Business Administration from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. However, April knew at the age of 9 that she wanted to be a baker and started making treats for her family on a regular basis. In 2010, April attended Macomb Community College for Pastry Arts where she gained knowledge of pastry techniques, artisan breads, French pastries, and recipe development.
“This is a great example of us connecting with an incredibly successful entrepreneur in the City of Detroit and being a part of her growth story,” said Rian English Barnhill, Vice President of Community and Government Affairs for Olympia Development of Michigan. “We are so excited for our fans, residents, visitors and colleagues to get a taste of the phenomenal treats at Good Cakes and Bakes and look forward to a great partnership with April and Michelle.”
